Good morning,

I hope that everyone had a great weekend! We have a few updates this week. But first, here’s an adorable kitten picture of what we all wish we were still doing on Monday mornings:

Caller Inappropriate for Our ServicesThe CI team has officially decided that the repeat caller, D, is inappropriate for our services. If you take a call from him, you may end the call yourself or transfer to CI staff so that we can end the call. For more information about this caller, please review the abusive caller binder or read the small white board on the desk in the Crisis Line office. If you have further questions or concerns about this caller, please don’t hesitate to talk with a CI staff member.
New List for Sex, Sexuality, and Gender Identity ResourcesWe wanted to make sure that everyone had access to the digital version of this resource as well as the paper copy in the resource binder. We hope this resource makes referrals around these issues a little easier!

Weekly Reminders

What should you do as soon as you walk into the CL office?

  1.  As soon as you arrive, you should sign in (this is very important – we get funding for every volunteer hour logged, and this is how we know you were actually there!!)
  2. You should also write your name on the marker board directly outside of the CL office! It helps everyone get to know you. Feel free to draw something fun on there too!!
  3. Check the white board for any updates, or important information.
  4. Make sure you know if anyone is on the pending list, and familiarize with the ‘current resident’ clipboard.
  5. Read through the past few days of calls in the call log book to catch up on what’s going on!

I’m not coming in for my shift.

  1. Email mwh-crisisline-l@list.indiana.edu ASAP and ask if someone can take your shift, be sure to include the shift day and time.
  2. If it’s the day of your shift, call shelter and let them know that you won’t be in, AND do #1.
  3. Please consider if there is any way to avoid this conflict, particularly if you don’t have a shift partner. Our services does NOT function in the ideal way if we do not have crisis liners. Staff needs to be available to help residents with their individual needs, assist walk-ins, respond to OSA requests, train new volunteers, etc. We absolutely depend on our crisis line to keep things running smoothly. If there’s any way that you can adjust things to avoid missing your shift, please do so.

-I can cover a shift that someone emailed the google group about!

You’re a lifesaver! Please copy the whole group on your response to them so that everyone knows the shift was covered.

CL Update – Shoutouts and a few reminders

Hello lovely Crisis Liners,

We hope you’ve been keeping warm during this cold snap. We wanted to give a few shoutouts to Nora for supporting a resident during a really difficult time, to Megan for donating a bunch of cold¬†weather gear, and to Brooklyn for doing great advocacy on a long call yesterday.¬†

Reminders
1) When you take messages for staff members please try to remember to put the date and time of the message on it.
2) There has been another frequent caller that we have agreed to be staff only. During your next shift please¬†read the latest entry in the abusive caller binder and if you think you’re taking to this caller please transfer them to a Crisis Intervention staff.¬†
New Resource There is a new resource sheet in the resource binder that can be helpful for callers that would like more extensive information or support around gender and sexuality. Please make sure to check that out!

Your gift certificate is available in the CI office.

CL Update – shout out and abusive caller protocol

Hello lovely Crisis Liners,
We hope that you are having a smooth transition into the new year. We wanted to give a shout out to Meghana, Haley, and Nora for being taking some difficult calls and keeping their calm when things in shelter were hectic.

Caller “Daniel”A caller¬†who goes by the pseudonym Daniel has called frequently and due to the nature of the calls we have decided that they are¬†staff only. You can find more information about how to recognize if you are talking to him in the abusive caller binder as well as some of the previous call logs.

Please remember: Only two volunteers can sign up for an in-office shift at once.

CL Update – shoutout + caller protocol

Hello lovely Crisis Liners,

We wish you a happy new year! Thank you to Yael for volunteering all day on Christmas and Meghana for being super helpful during break and of course all the other volunteers who have supported us these past few weeks…we appreciate you so much!

Karate caller protocol
A caller¬†who talks about karate, specifically his views about women who do karate and kickboxing, has been calling very frequently this past week. Because there has been some concern over this caller we have created a protocol (including a script for what to say) that is a green sheet taped to the CL office desk. The CI team has not collectively decided that this caller is abusive, however, we welcome your input on making this decision and we will keep you¬†updated. We would never expect you take a call that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable…please always feel free to transfer to a CI staff member.

CL Updates – appreciation + reminders

Hello Crisis Liners,

We hope that you’re taking time for yourself and your loved ones during the holiday season. Thank you to Gina, Sandy, and all the other volunteers who have supported us this week…we appreciate you so much!

Dropped call log
We are trying to get to the bottom of the dropped calls that have been happening pretty frequently on the¬†crisis¬†line. Our provider requested us to keep a record of the date and time of when a call dropped (we know there is no way for us to know for sure if someone didn’t just hang up, but we ask you to still note it down). The dropped call log is a piece of paper taped to the desk near the resident roster in the CL office.
Filling out the crisis line spring shift schedule
It is completely understandable that there has been some confusion around filling out the spring schedule. Just a reminder, we ask that¬†crisis¬†line¬†volunteers sign up for at least¬†one consistent shift¬†every semester. Please make sure to put your name on every week of the spring schedule (except for IU’s Spring Break week). The weekly tabs are at the bottom of the spreadsheet. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to shoot us an email.
Winter Break Schedule
The winter break¬†schedule¬†starts this Monday, December 17 and runs through Sunday, January 6. If you have any availability over the next three weeks, we’d love to have you in for a shift or two!

Crisis Line Updates- Starting of the Winter Break Schedule!

Hi there,

I hope that this week hasn’t been too stressful for those folks who had finals! We just have a few¬†updates¬†this week.
Huge Shout Out!
We always try to recognize when our volunteers go above and beyond (and so many of you do!) Our staff members wanted to make sure that we recognize Sara S. for all of the patient and compassionate work she is doing with survivors (and for taking Saturday morning shifts!!). Thank you so much Sara for all of the hard work you put in as a volunteer!

Crisis Line Updates- Holiday Break and Spring Semester Schedules

Happy Friday!

We have a few updates this week, including the shift sign ups for next semester!
In response to all the winter weather this week,
Lost Macbook Charger
There was a Macbook charger left in the crisis line office a few days ago. If it is yours, you can pick it up from the CI office.
Ending Calls with Continuing Callers and Potentially Abusive Callers
We have had a lot of calls lately from continuing callers. Some of these callers can be mistaken as abusive callers due to rough or sexual language. However, if you feel uncomfortable or unsure about a call, please transfer the call to an OSA (if there are any in office) or a CI staff member instead of hanging up. We recognize that there is no “right way” to discuss survivorship and we want to keep our services as open and accessible to folks of all experiences as possible. If at any point you feel uncomfortable on a call, it is always okay to transfer it to staff. Thank you for your all of your¬†help¬†in providing this critical advocacy to survivors!
Winter Break Schedule
We are still needing a lot of help during winter break. If you will be available at all, we would love to have you! You can sign up for shifts here.
Spring Semester Schedule
We have officially completed the spring semester schedule and it is ready for sign ups! The spring semester schedule will run from January 7- May 3. You can sign up for your spring shifts here,
PLEASE REMEMBER: If you are a¬†crisis¬†line¬†volunteer or an OSA 2, you must sign up for one consistent shift every week for the entire semester schedule. There is a tab for each week’s schedule at the bottom of the spreadsheet.
Thank you all for everything you do and enjoy your break (if you have one)!
